The Hourglass

“By midweek, I can’t focus on my duties at work, and spend most of my time on Summitpost and Mountain Project,” writes Niki Yoblonski. “There are so many things in the world I want to see–so many mountains to climb, things to discover. I have to get out of there.” Yet, inevitably, Sunday evening has her praying for the trailhead, a burger and a soft bed. Niki’s theory on achieving the work-outdoor life balance? Just turn the hourglass.

You can find more of Niki’s work at: TheMilesTickAway.squarespace.com. And you can listen to her previous Short, “By Slim Chance.”

Kind of pretentious. But then, I suppose that is a truthful portrayal of many climbers, myself included. Hopefully less so now, though.

But personally, I’d rather shit in a hole any day of the week. Shitting in a hole means I’m free – in my narrow, convoluted, contradictory, pretentious definition of the word, anyway.

Agree. Pretentious. I agree with the content, but it was a tough one to listen to.

I like this one quite a bit. I really like the imagery of flipping the hourglass, although I’m lucky if I make it to midweek before I’m checking out adventure websites while at work. Maybe it’s a little pretentious, but so am I, and I’m not so sure there’s anything wrong with that.

I like this so much. Is there a place we can read the whole transcript? This really resonates with me, and I like to keep the reading at hand to share with others who feel so.

Hi Courtney, I’ll see if I can track a written copy of the essay down for you. Check your email!

I would also love a written copy if you found one! I’ve listened to this so many times. It’s gold.
