The Year of Big Ideas 2018

“I think the jack of all trades gets a bum rap. The jack is the master of none, but I think the jack probably has a lot of fun,” says Fitz Cahall.

This year, we open our annual Year of Big Ideas with an ode to “mediocrity” from Fitz, then turn, as always, to our community for inspiration for the coming year. Happy 2018!

I have to say that I have been perfectly mediocre most of my life and it’s great! I recently saw a t-shirt at a road race I participated in that read, “world’s okay-est runner.” I’m an age-group runner that generally finishes in the middle of the pack. I’m a 5-hour marathoner. I train for the events I participate in but that training doesn’t rule my life and have an obsession with french fries that no training plan can cure. I hiked the Wonderland Trail in 10 days – during which we met a group of weirdos that were trying to run it in under 24-hours. I say weirdos because that is one beautiful hike and I enjoyed every second of scenery on my 10 days. I enjoy getting out on my road bike. I’m a slow, slow rider and I have to walk up really big hills. I still want to try to complete the “Ride the Rim” bike ride around Crater Lake. I’m a 44-year-old mom, full-time middle school teacher and I want to do all the things I love. I want to train for those things so I am not wrecked by them and am able to enjoy them but there is no reason that I need to be first. None. Like everyone on the podcast, my 2018 goals include spending more time outdoors. Hopefully spending quality time outdoors being perfectly mediocre.
